Construction Operations Building Information Exchange, or COBie, is the delivery and maintenance of facility information along with the specifications for delivery and maintenance of that information. The two assets that COBie addresses are the spaces and equipment of a facility. COBie provides the benefit of a cheaper and easier information handover. Electronic submittals that utilize COBie data are more organized and allow for quicker and easier construction of an operations and management manual.
COBie information is often transmitted using an XML or IFC file. These files are not intended for direct user interaction, but rather as an information set to be read by computerized maintenance management systems, or CMMS, and asset management software. COBie has been made to be integrated in more than 30 software systems as an internationally recognized standard through the efforts of the buildingSMART alliance®.
