San Antonio BIMForum

The Spring BIMForum will be held on April 25-26 in San Antonio, Texas

Theme: VDC Deliverables
The Spring BIMForum will focus on the ways that the VDC deliverables are used to solve specific problems i.e,  how they saved a project time or money, enabled better decisions, enhanced quality, improved the project schedule, eliminated information drop-off between parties, enhanced communication or collaboration, or had other meaningful impact to the design, construction or operation of the building.

Examples of VDC Deliverables that will be explored:

Problem: The owner wanted the building to face a certain direction.  The building was located in a high-solar radiation environment (like the desert) and the heat load on the building would have doubled the mechanical engineer’s cooling requirements.

Solution: The project team was able to use various BIM tools to illustrate the thermal loading, weather station data, shadow studies and computational fluid dynamics to dramatically explain the orientation’s impact on the building envelope performance.

Problem: The fast-track construction project requires the construction manager to buyout the millwork package with an immense amount of offsite prefabrication.  Some of the millwork is book-matched (grain matched) and has tolerances of a 1/16”.  The construction manager needs to guarantee the dimensions of the substrate (drywall) for the prefabricated millwork install to go smoothly and meet the project schedule.

Solution: The CM used laser scanning to capture the exact as-built dimensions of the walls the millwork was to be applied to and by using industrial manufacturing software, create an automatic discrepancy report so that the drywall and millwork trade contractors could coordinate a solution prior to the millwork arriving on-site.

Registration Fee: $425 before 3/30/2012; $550 after 3/30/2012

Civil and Industrial BIMForum

BIM and VDC in A Horizontal World
A half day Civil, Industrial, and Utilities VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) Forum will be held on April 24th in conjunction with the April 25-26 BIMForum in San Antonio, Texas. The session will demonstrate successful implementations of VDC on Highway, Road, Bridge, Utility, Treatment Plants, and Power Distribution projects and will show how these projects have realized substantial financial and schedule savings. Presentations will focus on the use of VDC to enhance work flow, minimize schedules, increase safety, provide a better end product, or increase field productivity.

BIM Education Program

Unit 3 & 4 of AGC's BIM Education Program will be held in Conjunction with the BIMForum at the San Antonio Hyatt.
BIM Contract Negotiation and Risk Allocation
April 23, 2012, 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Grand Hyatt San Antonio
Fee: $250; Download Registration Form

BIM Contract Negotiation and Risk Allocation is a full-day (8-hour) course that examines BIM and contract terminology to determine best practices for integrating BIM into project contracts. Hot-button issues such as standard of care, intellectual property rights, and insurance and surety bonding coverage are discussed to help participants successfully prepare for BIM implementation.

BIM Process, Adoption and Integration

April 27, 2012 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Grand Hyatt San Antonio
Fee: $250; Download Registration Form

BIM Process, Adoption, and Integration is a full-day (8-hour) course that provides a foundation for participants to establish and execute the BIM process, facilitate its adoption, and achieve integration on a single project and at a company level to execute multiple BIM projects simultaneously. This course is developed for those who have had significant exposure to BIM tools, mechanics, theory and processes and want to learn best practices to implement it into construction projects and firms. This course relies on a highly participatory learning environment including case studies, classroom discussions, and instructor-led discussions.
