Webinar: Lean Architecture

BIMForum Lean Architecture Banner

The tenets of Lean Thinking have steadily infiltrated the construction industry with increasingly wide application. By contrast, design practices are largely unchanged. Why? A central task of the design phases is to envision and develop a viable solution to an often changing set of parameters. This entails managing many subjective elements and communicating often complex ideas to gain consensus. This differs from construction which deals with many logistics – estimating, the procurement and staging of materials, managing trades and the scheduling of manpower.
This fast paced presentation looks at how design delivery processes can be better structured to focus on value, reduce waste, increase quality, and eliminate barriers. It examines the tenets of Lean Thinking, 6Sigma, and the Theory of Constraints with 3 goals for implementation by design firms with applications to project management, documentation, and technology. It shares real world examples for implementation by design professionals.
Since its introduction at the 2009 AIA National Convention this innovative program has been presented at AIA conferences and many other industry venues across the country. It was presented again at the 2013 AIA National Convention and consecutively at the 2011, 2012, and 2013 Texas Society of Architects Conventions. Mr. Czap co-authored the chapter on Construction Drawings in the AIA’s (current) 15th Edition of the Architect’s Handbook of Professional Practice, which includes a section by Mr. Czap on Lean Architecture.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Compare the three current systems of Process Management: Lean Thinking, 6 Sigma, and the Theory of Constraints.
  2. The technology industry devises ingenious ways for humans to intuitively interact with increasingly complex devices – understand what design professionals can apply to their practice.
  3. Learn proven strategies for dealing with the subjective elements of design practices and how to communicate project complexity more simply.
