The Fall 2010 BIMForum will be held in Atlanta, GA on October 14 and15. The theme of this meeting is the “Evidence on BIM: High performance Hype Meets Reality.” The BIMForum recognizes that Owners and others in the building industry are struggling to determine if using BIM improves performance on a capital project. Therefore, this meeting will focus on whether real-world evidence substantiates the claims the BIM leads to higher performance in design, construction, operation and maintenance. Presentation topics will include:

Does BIM actually lead to higher performing Buildings?

Can the Evidence Based Design process be applied to BIM?

How do Owner’s evaluate BIM practitioners and make decision about using BIM?

What post-occupancy evidence exists that demonstrates that BIM buildings perform as projected?

The BIMForum has grown into THE industry-leading user’s group focused on the application of virtual design and construction for the AEC industry. It includes more than 1,800 members from the most advanced firms across the commercial construction Industry.

The Evidence on BIM: High Performance Hype Meets Reality

The BIMForum recognizes that Owners and others in the building industry are struggling to determine if using BIM improves performance on a capital project. Therefore, the October BIMForum meeting wants to focus on whether real-world evidence substantiates the claims that BIM leads to higher performance in design, construction, operation, maintenance, or use of the completed building. In order to close the gap between theory and reality, presentations need to be able to demonstrate through specific metrics that there are measurable improvements when compared to legacy processes, such as improvements in meeting budgets and schedules or in enhancing building performance related to energy efficiency, sustainability, occupant comfort and productivity, or environmental impacts.

If you have such experiences, we are very much interested in hearing from you. For more information and instructions on how to submit, Click here.

The Summer, 2010 BIMForum will be held on June 15-18 in Kansas City, Missouri, and will focus on BIM-enabled Lean Construction including the primary principles involved in Lean design and construction and how building information modeling (BIM) can best be integrated into Lean construction practices. Anyone interested in learning more about BIM or developing the knowledge and competency needed to successfully implement BIM in your organization is encouraged to attend.

The BIMForum has grown into THE industry-leading user’s group focused on the application of virtual design and construction for the AEC industry. It includes more than 1,800 members from the most advanced firms across the commercial construction Industry.

BIMForum Tours: Tours of three local construction sites and buildings that have used BIM as an integral part of their design and construction process, including:

JE Dunn Headquarters 1001 Locust Street Kansas City, MO 64106

In August of 2009, JE Dunn moved into their new headquarters, which houses 550 employees. The 6-story office building includes an adjacent parking structure to serve 780 vehicles, which will service both JE Dunn employees and the public. The $18.3 million parking structure will be funded by the City of Kansas City, Missouri. The design complements the existing architecture of City Hall, the Federal Courthouse and the Department of Transportation Building. Opening onto the Illus W. Davis

Park south of 10th Street between Locust and Cherry Streets, the exterior is made of precast concrete and glass and houses a flexible office environment, state-of-the-art technology, a cafeteria and other public

spaces. The designs were prepared by BNIM/360°, a joint venture of BNIM and 360° Architecture.

As a part of the design and construction process, the architectural, engineering and construction team worked in constant collaboration. The team embraced the sub consultants and trained the entire team to utilize Building Information Modeling. The result is a 100 percent BIM designed project. For more information click here.

Kaufmann Performing Arts Center 906 Grand Blvd., 11th Floor Kansas City, MO 64106

Resting within the newly revitalized Kansas City Live District, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts blends aesthetics and functionality for performance art. Constructed of structural steel, concrete, and glass, this spectacular building features a transparent lobby, which provides a 4-story open atrium for visitors.

The 286,031 SF structure offers three separate halls for various events. A unique aspect of the construction phase is that the interior finishes will take up to one year to complete due to the intricate nature of these components. Due to the complexity of this project, Building Information Modeling was utilized by the design and construction team to create 2-D and 3-D models. This collaboration enabled the coordination of complex systems throughout the building. For more information click here.

Kansas City Wizards 1650 Village West Kansas City, Kansas 66111

Turner is providing Construction Management at Risk services for a 4th MLS-Specific Stadium. The new home of the Kansas City Wizards is a 365,000 SF, 18,000-seat stadium located at the Village West retail development and adjacent to Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, KS. The facility will be a multi-use venue to accommodate Major League Soccer games, and other field sports, and with a fan capacity of 27,000 for concerts. Retail, office complex and youth soccer field components will be part of a future development.

The participating software vendors on the Technology sub forum have been engaged in ongoing discussions as a group as to what we should be focusing on and how we can best serve the BIMForum Member community. As the large majority of BIMForum members are also our customers, we have been hearing loud and clear about the challenges that many users face in exchanging project data between various BIM Authoring, Collaboration, 4D, Cost Estimating, Clearance Checking and related software titles. We really think that we need to continue to reach out to our user community and help work through some of these interoperability challenges. As this whole discussion of interoperability between BIM software tools can easily get swept up into some boundless “boil the ocean” challenges, we software vendors really want to work with our members to identify a couple of key areas of data interoperability that we can focus on. We also want to focus the discussion on the business drivers.

To that end, we really think that a first step is a simple member survey on interoperability with the following goals:

Start to qualify and quantify the top interoperability/data exchange challenges that our members face in working with our BIM and related software tools.

Ask our members when answering the survey to articulate the “business issue” with the identified data exchange pain point in addition to the technical workflow issues.

Keep the initial survey as open ended as possible to avoid coming across as a very prescriptive survey.

Focus on identifying data exchange workflows that are costing projects the most time, money or just aggravation.

Gather insight into the existing AEC data exchange standards that are being leveraged today both successfully and unsuccessfully.

Identify & prioritize some data exchange workflows that Software Vendor community can potentially work on.

Identify some data exchange workflows that perhaps already have technical solutions available today that we vendors need to do a better job of education the BIMForum members on.

Finally give us some more insight how to best educate the community & manage expectations both within the context of the limitations of our technology today as well as the limitations with respect to the standards themselves. For example, the IFC standard today has no specification for precast concrete.
