As BIM is integrated into current AEC practices, the lack of national standards becomes a larger concern. Last month, at the AGC Building Division Bi-Annual meeting, the BIMForum decided to make the issue a priority.
Subforum leaders Davis Chauviere, of HKS Inc., and David Sandlin, of GE Johnson Construction Company, lead the discussion on developing a standard. Chauviere asserted that although the official National BIM Standards will be developed by National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS), the BIMForum can take a “first pass” at it.
The BIMForum anticipates that their draft will serve as a standard for BIM-users until NIBS develops a more comprehensive standard. The BIMForum will also submit their draft to NIBS, so that NIBS can utilize it in developing the National BIM Standard. As a first step, the BIMForum intends to relate model components with construction deliverables. This will clarify the expectations of parties receiving models as well as educate parties creating models.
BIMForum leaders and other interested members will convene virtually on February 21st at 1 pm EST to discuss the standard. For more details on that meeting, contact Laura Handler.
